Dreams of Travel

Ok, let's rewind back two and a half weeks ago. It's my birthday and i'm at work celebrating with coworkers at a bar. As one of the younger employees and thinking about life in general I ask all to answer one question.

"If you were 25 years old again, what would you do differently?"

Surprisingly there were two main answers repeated. Keep in mind I am surrounded by a melting pot of different cultures and ages as I was working in downtown Manhattan in the liquor business. So, diversity was not an issue.

The first answer was most people would have broken up with their significant other at the time. I was not too surprised by this answer as love is not always easy and not always so clear. I'm starting to find that my twenties are about finding myself. What my likes and dislikes are. What am I willing to fight for? Who do I give my trust too? What will I compromise on? What my favorite drink is?

The second most given answer was TRAVEL. Most people wish they would have traveled more. This one really resonated with me. As I sit here typing my blog and am essentially broke, I still have dreams of traveling. Last week I tuned into a show on the Discovery channel called Human Planet. I'm a total geek and will take a good documentary over a reality show ANY day of the week. Human Planet shows how people live, eat, and hunt in the most remote parts of the world.

It was so fascinating to see how a boy in the Altai mountains of Mongolia, trains an eagle to hunt for him. To see a relationship formed between man and nature had me in awe. I believe we were created with a connection to animals. When you are born in a city were the only nature you know are pigeons, which you have to dodge because they have lost there fear of man, you lose that connection. You don't know what you've lost if you've never felt it.

In our fast paced lives where we don't have time to look around us and even notice nature it was refreshing to see that there are people who do. I may not be able to afford it but I can watch shows such as these and dream of places I never knew existed.
